We are enhancing the Aurora Promenade streetscape on Yonge Street (between Wellington Street and Church Street). This historic downtown area will be redesigned with streetscape improvements for key sections of the Yonge Street corridor. The purpose of this project is to enhance the public space, integrate the downtown business core with the newly constructed Aurora Town Square, and address required rehabilitation of existing infrastructure.

The Town has retained an Engineering Consultant to carry out technical studies and assessments for the subject area. Some elements that will be incorporated as part of the design include the following:

• Street light pole upgrades along Yonge Street

Improvements for sidewalks, crosswalks, entry features, and signage

Accessibility elements along Yonge Street

Parking and traffic flow improvements in the downtown business core area

• Streetscape features such as landscaping, trees, and street furniture

Rehabilitation and replacement of critical infrastructure

As part of this project, essential infrastructure such as the existing sanitary sewer (which was built in 1932) will be assessed and replaced as part of this construction project. The sewer mains along this part of Yonge Street have aged significantly and are approaching the end of their estimated service life, which is why it’s important to carry out these upgrades.

This project is currently commencing the design phase. We will be seeking your input through various stakeholder engagement efforts such as Public Information Centres (PIC) and Open House events in the future. Additional information and updates will be provided here throughout the course of the project.

I haven’t seen the issues that some others mention. While it’s true we have an abundance of Pot Shops in town, I think that many of the improvements being suggested will make the area more “friendly “ to more citizens, potentially pushing “out” the apparent undesirables. The improvements will bring more people to the area making it more desirable to new businesses (shops, restaurants). (Landlords are likely renting out to pot shops because other businesses aren’t coming to the area).

Similarly, as others have noted, this has to be more than just some pretty, new lamps and flower planters.

Improving the flow of traffic (I like some of the lane allocations at the Wellington intersection) is a must.

“Serious misuse of public funds”, “waste of money”? Really? Look at how other towns have revitalized their downtown areas. Do detractors really want to leave things as they are?

This is a serious misuse of public funds. Downtown Aurora has become an unwelcoming environment, with individuals openly smoking cannabis, soliciting money to purchase cannabis products, and underage customers approaching passersby to buy for them. The sidewalks and streets are littered with cannabis-related waste, creating an unsafe and unpleasant atmosphere for residents and visitors alike.

This situation will not improve until cannabis shops are removed from the downtown core, including the location across from the library, south of Kennedy Street. It is highly inappropriate for such establishments to be situated in this area, and their presence is damaging the character and reputation of our town.

Not necessarily a waste of money but if we end up with only cute new lamp standards, flowerpots, benches (no space on Yonge sidewalks) and status quo parking, then we didn’t need a study and public consult. Without any traffic diversion, modal shift, active/public transit prioritization, and study of the broader area around this one block, life in the area where population growth is the highest density while also being a cultural destination will become chaotic. Especially for those in dense housing along Yonge who will likely be funding these “improvements” through their development charges but will likely not benefit from any improvement or enhancements at their doorsteps because their homes are not part of this area.
This consultation is largely for drivers who do not live anywhere near this part of town and will argue every change on the basis of parking (it’s always about parking- free parking at that).
Cars are basically ruining the streetscape and the downtown experience. It’s time to prioritize the people in the area and their safety.

This is a waste of money. There are higher needs than beautifying a few blocks. We need more pools and recreation programs.

This needs to be done integrated with transit and density expectations for Yonge st. Stores have no pedestrian public realm and no wayfinding to help people navigate. Wider sidewalks and bike lanes and transit with destinations to help orient walkability. There are no destination points and crossings midblock.
