Noise restrictions are currently specific to certain areas (Residential, Commercial, Industrial) and can be reviewed in the Noise Bylaw online. If you would to file a complaint, please contact our Bylaw Services Department at 905-727-3123 or bdepartment@aurora.ca
Share I think it is important to have flexibility without too many restrictions. Some people do not have much choice but to do the necessary home maintenance on the weekend. Truth be told I would rather have a neighbour who is looking after their home than one who is not. When I hear the noises it means people are making improvements and any outdoor social noise means they are enjoying their home in company. Let's not make too many rules around this. on Facebook

As part of the Town’s Noise By-law review, staff have considered the changing needs of the Town’s residents. This includes more people who work shifts and a non-traditional work week. Part of this review will include more flexibility for all residents, while also making sure we continue to maintain and enhance existing standards, where applicable.
Share What are the rules regarding maximum decibels emitted by a business or school? For example, Lester B. Pearson has a very noisy ventilation system running from 6am daily. With school out, can they be asked to turn down the system?

The Town does not currently include decibel levels in our Noise By-law. As part of the comprehensive review, this was something that was considered but a decision was made not to proceed with decibel requirements. Decibel readings are more complex than obtaining a numerical reading and require that ambient noise (traffic, vehicles, businesses, children playing, etc.) are considered at the time of measurement. The implementation of a decibel based system also comes at a significant cost to the Town on an annual basis as training is required and the devices require calibration. If a ventilation system is operating and it is making strange noises, this could be investigated under the Town’s Property Standards By-law from a maintenance standpoint. If the operation of the unit is integral to the building, it would be exempt.
For Industrial occupancies, they are regulated by the Ministry of Environment and the Town does not generally have purview over these types of establishments. We recently received a complaint in an Industrial neighbourhood and staff did liaise with Ministry staff and conduct a Property Standards Inspection to ensure the proper operation of any equipment.
Share Could we do more to reinforce the proper use of fireworks? It seems to be an issue which is increasing in its use beyond days that are celebratory. The fireworks are not only unexpected, they are alarming and disruptive especially late into the night. In my opinion this is the type of noise infraction that is more problematic compared to others. Mostly because it is loud, unnecessary and causing great distress for children, pets, seniors and the general public. on Facebook

Fireworks have become a growing concern lately. Our current Fireworks By-law only allows for fireworks to be discharged on Canada Day and Victoria Day, and the days preceding those days. The current Fireworks By-law does not consider religious festivals and ceremonies. Although the noise caused from fireworks is not being addressed in this by-law review, staff will be reviewing the fireworks by-law at a future date to address community concerns.
Share Can we propose a time in Aurora that is noise-free? Like a few hours every Sunday morning (or any morning...), or say one night a week from 5 pm on? There seems to be a near-constant barrage of sound from leaf blowers, lawnmowers, whipper snippers, power washers, chain saws, etc. that makes enjoying outdoor spaces next to impossible. A few hours a week of no loud noises would be beneficial to everyone. on Facebook

Staff will take this suggestion into consideration however, we are also trying to find away to provide flexibility for the growing number of shift workers who reside in Town.

The Town does not have jurisdiction over Crown agencies and their land. Unfortunately the GO Trains and Metrolinx are exempt from these provisions.

Hello,
Thank you for participating in the Noise By-law Public Consultation. If noise from a car or motorcycle is occurring on private property and is constantly occurring, the new Noise By-law will be able to address this issue.
Noise emitting from motorcycles or cars which is occurring on roadways, falls under the jurisdiction of York Regional Police as the Highway Traffic Act has language to address these concerns. Unfortunately the Provincial government does not permit Bylaw Enforcement Officers to conduct enforcement for Highway Traffic Act related offences.
Share Why is Sunday deemed special... historically, religion based?
What about other religions having their holy day respected?
People work and commute long hours, and many work on Sat or Sun, let alone shifts - They need any time they can get to do outdoor chores, renos, lawn cutting, etc....Likely not after dark, but possibly in the garage up to 10pm
Times have changed...."Mon-Fri 9-5" is long gone.
Yes a relentless dog barking should be controlled. But children making noise ?
It's a very complicated issue, but also should not be over restrictive.
Unfortunately, the wonderful , Mon - Fri 9-5 days of the 60's and 70's are gone.
Many do work in the garage when they come home from work.
Not sure there is a solution for all. Free time is precious, and doesn't always align with others.
Thanks and good luck. on Facebook

Hello Hamish,
Thanks for reaching out!
The proposed Noise Bylaw does deal with all aspects of Noise in Aurora. Construction noise was highlighted as a significant concern in our initial public consultation in March 2020.
In the scenario you provided, we would still permit these types of events. As part of the review, we recognized that some of the current restrictions for events like you’ve described were too stringent. Enforcement would continue to be on a complaint basis response system and Bylaw Services could issue a Noise Exemption Permit (as is the case now) for small, community minded events.
Thanks for participating and let us know if you have any other questions!
