New Korean War Memorial to be Unveiled at Peace Park- Join us!

A memorial dedicated to the Korean War effort will be unveiled at Peace Park on Saturday, March 25 at 11 a.m. This project is a partnership between Veterans Affairs Canada, the Town of Aurora, the Township of King, the Town of Stouffville, and the Aurora Legion.

In 2021, the Town of Aurora and the Aurora Legion ran a social media campaign seeking feedback from the community for design options for the Korean War memorial. Alex Theaker submitted the winning design for the memorial which is now in place at Peace Park. Remembrances of Canada’s contribution to the Korean War can be found in many municipalities across this country. With this year marking the seventieth anniversary of the signing of the Armistice Agreement which ended the fighting, it is both timely and fitting to memorialize the sacrifice which those from Aurora and surrounding communities have made to protect the rights and freedoms around the world.

BACKGROUND

Today, remembrances of Canada’s contribution to the Korean War effort can be found in many municipalities across this country. Aurora’s War Memorial Peace Park solemnly pays tribute to those from Aurora, King and Whitchurch-Stouffville who served and were lost in the two world wars and the Afghan war. There is, however, no similar recognition of the Korean War.

Just past the seventieth anniversary of the outbreak of the war, it is both timely and fitting to memorialize the sacrifice which those from Aurora and area made to repel yet another threat to the freedom and right of self-determination of the world’s peoples. Many thanks to Bill Newman for his efforts in bringing this issue to the attention of Town Council.

More information on the Korean War can be found in the document library on the righthand side of this page.

We are asking the public to submit their design ideas for a fitting monument to honour those from Aurora, King and Whitchurch-Stouffville who fought in the Korean War. The final memorial will be placed in Peace Park in Aurora.

Concept drawings can be as simple as a pencil sketch to provide the inspiration and general idea for a suitable memorial. No intricate professional designs needed. Amateur artists welcome! The memorial should not contain any names of soldiers who fought in the war, and must be in both English and French. The designer of the winning submission will be invited to unveil the monument at a future date and will also receive a gift card in the amount of $250.

Deadline: Please submit your designs by Friday, May 28, 2021.
