Aurora is exploring an exciting opportunity to help homeowners overcome barriers to making energy-efficient upgrades in their homes.

We’re working on designing a tailored retrofit program that reflects our community’s unique needs, taps into the expertise of local stakeholders, and aligns with best practices for improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This important initiative is proudly supported by the Green Municipal Fund from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities through the Community Efficiency Financing (CEF) program.

I am opposed to the Town competing in the private sector for heat pump sales and financing. This industry is already established, highly competitive and full of expertise. Also, the Provincial government already has a well established "save on energy" program so we don't need to duplicate it or rebrand it. This program requires homeowners to use their property as collateral therefore any Bank will accept a home as collateral and Banks should be able to offer the lowest rates. Is the Town prepared to take on extra RISK that a Bank would not? Please use tax dollars for shared common good/purpose. Lastly, the paid Consultant stated on the record this year during a Council meeting that natural gas offers homeowners the lowest cost of operation and this problem is no longer of the same value now that Carbon pricing has been removed from natural gas bills. Thank you.

As much as I think being energy efficient is important, I think the cost of some of these programs are a huge waste of resources and actually bad for the environment. Great example - CFL lights. Much of the world invested heavily in them and even started dismantling incandescent lamp manufacturing. It wasn’t long before we found they found mercury in CFL that made them dangerous and expensive to dispose of.
