Last week, Council endorsed the new Community Energy Plan (CEP), which is a guiding document that provides strategic direction to move towards a sustainable energy future. It takes a long-term view to 2050 and aims to improve energy efficiency, reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and foster a culture of conservation. It considers the impact of future growth and options for local clean energy generation. Supporting economic development by better meeting local energy needs is a key element within the Plan. The Community Energy Plan provides a pathway towards the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% from 2018 levels by 2050.

The vision for Aurora’s Community Energy Plan (CEP): “Aurora is a leader in energy and emissions reduction, with a focus on improving quality of life in collaboration with residents, organizations and businesses."

The following principles will be taken into account for the Community Energy Plan (CEP) development:

    • That the CEP promotes economically viable and environmental sustainable solutions.
    • That the process to develop the CEP allows for meaningful stakeholder and public engagement and input.
    • That the CEP supports sustainable energy policies and practices in the Town of Aurora's planning for community development, transportation transit services and economic development.

The CEP will capture Aurora's energy use today and provide a strategic plan on how to move forward towards a sustainable energy system.

It is anticipated that the CEP will bring financial, social and environmental benefits to the municipality, residents, businesses, developers, and major institutions.

It is expected that the CEP will address such things as energy efficient buildings and neighborhoods, energy-efficient transportation systems, efficient energy distribution, clean and renewable energy, and greenhouse gas emissions, in addition to other areas that may be identified through the public consultation process.
